Chapter Two

Video: Tiny Sumte Opens its Doors to 615 Refugees

VonFranziska Scheven and Tal Rimon

Sumte isn’t the isolated north German rural town it used to be after 615 refugees from 25 countries moved in. But a few weeks on, residents say life hasn’t actually changed all that much, and some seem pleased.

On October 19, the 102 residents of Sumte in northern Germany were told by state officials that they would be hosting up to 1,000 refugees in an abandoned office building on the edge of their rural village. In early November, the first 615 refugees from 26 countries arrived. Handelsblatt Global Edition has been documenting the town’s development. Click here to see how Sumte residents reacted when they first heard about the refugee camp.
